Overview

Chengdu lacquerware carries thousands of years of Chinese craftsmanship.
Through countless layers of natural lacquer, artisans transform simple materials into objects of beauty and patience. During this experience, discover the history behind this ancient craft, visit an artisan workshop, and create your own lacquerware piece guided by professional craftsmen.

More than simply seeing the craft, you’ll experience the patience and process behind it through you own hands.

*Notice: The lacquerware experience requires booking at least three days in advance.

Choose Your Piece, Shape Your Memory

Lacquer Bead

Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
Time: 50 min
A mystery bead pack — size and color are random. Turn yours into a bracelet or necklace, and carry a little piece of Chengdu with you.

Lacquer Chopsticks

Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Time: 60-70 min
Use them as chopsticks, or wear one as a hairpin — lacquer doesn’t build static and is gentle on your hair.

Gourd Pendant

Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
Time: 60-70 min
In Chinese culture, the gourd symbolizes fortune and blessing. Hang it on your car, bag, or display it as a small ornament.

Inlaid Lacquer Cup

Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Time: 90 min
A porcelain-bodied cup inlaid with mother-of-pearl — you’ll carve the pattern by hand, layer by layer.

Silver-Engraved Bookmark

Difficulty: ★★★★☆
Time: 90 min
A silver-engraved lacquer bookmark — silver engraving is a signature Chengdu lacquerware technique, and you’ll carve the pattern directly onto a silver sheet.

I loved that I could actually take home something I made myself. It felt much more meaningful than buying a souvenir, and learning about the craft gave me a completely different perspective on Chengdu’s heritage.

The hands-on part was definitely the highlight. The artisan explained each step clearly, and even as a complete beginner I never felt lost. It was relaxing, creative, and very different from a typical sightseeing experience.
