Overview

Sichuan Opera has been part of Chengdu’s cultural landscape for centuries — a world of painted faces, elaborate costumes, dramatic movement, and extraordinary stagecraft. Here, you won’t experience it only from a theatre seat.

Step behind the scenes, choose a character, and watch yourself transform through professional makeup and traditional costume. Then meet the performers and experience the artistry of face-changing and fire-breathing from a much closer perspective.

*Scheduling note: Makeup and costume transformation can be arranged either in the morning or after 4:00 PM. For guests who would also like to attend the live Sichuan Opera performance, the transformation must be scheduled after 4:00 PM, with the show starting at 7:30 PM.

I originally booked this because I wanted to see face-changing, but the behind-the-scenes part ended up being just as memorable as the performance itself. Watching the makeup come together, putting on the full costume, and learning what each detail represents completely changed the way I watched the show afterwards. It felt much more personal than simply sitting in the audience, and it was one of those experiences that made me feel like I actually understood a little more about Chengdu’s culture rather than just seeing it.

I honestly didn’t want the experience to end. Seeing myself transformed into a Sichuan Opera character was surreal. I’ll remember this for a long time.
